Philadelphia Eagles vs Atlanta Falcons: NFL Monday Night Football Predictions & Preview
The first Monday Night Football game of the 2015 NFL season is here. It's a battle of the birds in this one, as two teams who missed the playoffs last season face off. These two NFC teams are each being picked to win their respective divisions by many NFL experts.
Let's preview the game and pick a winner.
Philadelphia Eagles
It was a wild ride for the Eagles this offseason. The Eagles shipped away their starting quarterback to the St. Louis Rams, LeSean McCoy is now with the Buffalo Bills, and Tim Tebow didn't quite work out. Sam Bradford is set to make his first start in more than 600 days, and Chip Kelly's fast-paced offense will be on display.
By far the biggest addition for the Eagles this offseason was cornerback Byron Maxwell. The former Seattle Seahawk will fit in nicely with the Eagles, whose pass defense ranked 28th last season. DeMarco Murray, who led the NFL in rushing yards last season, will be carrying the ball for the Eagles against the Falcons. Murray is the first running back in NFL history to lead the NFL in rushing yards and then play for a divisional team the very next season.
The Washington Redskins and New York Giants lost, but the Dallas Cowboys did win their Sunday Night Football game. Meaning if the Eagles can beat the Falcons on Monday night, they will be tied with the Cowboys for first in the NFC East.
Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons are the underdogs in this game, but they still have the offensive pieces to go toe to toe with the Eagles. Julio Jones and Roddy White create a great wide receiver tandem, while Matt Ryan is still a quality quarterback. The Falcons finished last season a disappointing 6-10, which was only one win behind the Carolina Panthers for first place in the NFC South.
Like the Eagles, the Falcons have huge issues in the secondary. The Falcons had the worst pass defense in the NFL last season, and they ranked dead last in total yards allowed. Running the football has been a concern for the Falcons as well. Without a stable running game, Ryan has been prone to making more and more mistakes with costly turnovers.
Fortunately for the Falcons, they will have home field advantage in this game against the Eagles. The Falcons don't have a great defensive line, so we may see some run blitzing in order to contain Murray.
Schedule
The Eagles and Falcons will play each other on Monday, Sept. 14 at 7:10 p.m. EDT. The game will be played at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. You can watch a live game stream here.
Prediction
The Falcons will have home field advantage, but the Eagles will overwhelm them in the end. The Falcons just have too many holes on defense to be trusted, and you can expect Murray to run wild against them. The Eagles' improved secondary will make some plays as well. With this win, the Eagles and Cowboys will be tied for first in the division.
Eagles win 31-24
