Guillermo del Toro's Next Project: 'Wall-E' and 'Splash' Mashup?
Guessing where Guillermo del Toro is headed next is arguably one of the great mysteries in the film industry.
The Mexican auteur has been linked to a plethora of projects over the years, and yet, some happen while others wind up in limbo. A few years back he was supposed to do a third "Hellboy" movie, as well as the two "Hobbit" movies. The former has yet to happen, though there is still interest in making it work. As for the latter, del Toro pulled out at some point due to creative disagreements with then-producer Peter Jackson; Jackson wound up directing a trilogy out of the films, while many wondered how much better the franchise would have been if del Toro had stayed on.
"Pacific Rim 2," the sequel to the cult classic from 2013, was expected to be the next movie directed by the Mexican, but it seems that that movie is now on hold. The first movie actually flopped at the box office (raking in $101 million of its $190 million budget in the US), but it developed a following thereafter and seems to have won over the studio into producing a sequel. Of course, there is no telling whether the second film will happen for sure.
Other projects that del Toro has been linked to include a Frankenstein film, "Carnival Row" and now a new movie that is said to be inspired by "Wall-E" and "Splash."
"Wall-E" was Pixar's award-winning animated film about a lonely robot on earth who eventually finds out what happened to humanity. "Splash" was a 1984 film that starred Tom Hanks and told the story of a man who falls in love with a mermaid who saved him as a child. That film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Screenplay.
It should be interesting to find out what exactly del Toro winds up tackling considering his busy schedule and library of supposed projects.
Whatever ends up happening, at least fans can clamor over his new film "Crimson Peak," which heads to theaters this October.
