Elton John was prank-called into believing he was talking with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In a comic scheme that resembles something right out of an old episode of “Crank Yankers,” a Russian prank caller and his sidekick admitted to tricking the British singer into discussing gay rights with whom he thought was the Russian leader.

According to the BBC, Vladimir Krasnov, the crack caller who is known as "Vovan," revealed how the award-winning composer and gay rights activist "really believed he was talking to the people we said we were."

"Thank-you to President Vladimir Putin for reaching out and speaking via telephone with me today," wrote a grateful Elton John on his official Instagram account. "I look to forward to meeting with you face-to-face to discuss LGBT equality in Russia.”

While still in the dark about being duped, John praised Putin for the apparent tolerance he exhibited on the phone. The Kremlin, however, denied Putin contacted the legendary singer and went so far as to suggest that the call could have been a hoax.

"There was no conversation," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov informed reporters according to CNN.

Vovan has now come clean and admitted to the hoax, giving credit to his sidekick Alexei Stolyarov, aka "Lexus," for being able to pull off the ruse. "Alexei has excellent English so he played (presidential press secretary) Dmitry Peskov and translated our conversation. And I was Vladimir Putin," said Vovan.

"It turned out that Elton John was really expecting that call, so he really believed he was talking to the people we said we were," explained the joker. "He said 'Thank you, you have made my day. This day and this conversation were the most wonderful of my life.'"

Russian audiences will be able to hear part of the hoax on Russian state TV on Wednesday night. The rest of us will probably get it on Youtube about an hour later.
