Director Wes Ball has confirmed that he will be returning for the third film in the "Maze Runner" franchise of the James Dashner-based novel, "The Maze Runner: The Death Cure," as reported by Variety. Ball directed "The Maze Runner" in 2014 and "The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials," which will be opening in the U.S. this weekend.

"Ultimately our goal is to create an awesome three-movie trilogy. Not many people have done that and now I have the opportunity to do that. I am directing the third film and we've already been busy preparing and working on the final conclusion of this saga," Ball told Variety during the red carpet premiere of "The Scorch Trials" in New York City.

Ball is probably referring to "Harry Potter," "The Hunger Games" and "Divergent" movie franchises wherein different set of directors made the films. He may want to be like "The Lord of the Rings Trilogy" director Peter Jackson, who directed all of the franchise's films, according to Screen Rant.

"We are setting up a lot of things that aren't necessarily apparent in the second movie, but it will pay off big time in the third movie," he added. Ball also said that he plans to "do justice" to the books with a clear likeness to the film from beginning, middle and end.

The 34-year-old director is very happy that he was asked to return for the third film. "So that has been my approach and I'm glad that I can finish the series. I'm lucky and thankful that they asked me to direct all three films. At first I wasn't sure if I was going to do it or not, but honestly, it was the cast that I wanted to work with again. They are such great people," Ball said.

"The Maze Runner" movies are based on James Dashner's 2009 novel of the same name. Its first installment made $345 million at the worldwide box office in 2014 against a budget of $34 million. The film's stars are Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Ki Hong Lee, Will Poulter and Patricia Clarkson.

"The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" will premiere in the U.S. this weekend and is distributed by 20th Century Fox. It has a reported budget of $61 million, according to Hollywood Reporter.

Filming for "The Maze Runner: The Death Cure" will begin in December and planned to be released on Feb. 17, 2017. Ball told Digital Spy that the third film won't be split into two films, saying, "I think there's something off about four. For me, if I have any say in it, there's three movies basically. "We're not going to split a book in two, no way. I think three movies is the right number, Star Wars!"
