‘Law & Order’ Getting a Live Reality Show Spinoff
The popular "Law & Order" franchise is about to produce another spinoff for NBC, but it is not quite what fans are used to -- it's a reality show named "Law & Order: You the Jury."
To top that off, it will be aired live, according to Deadline.
There have been several incarnations of the "Law & Order" franchise with spinoffs like "SVU," "Criminal Intent," "Trial by Jury," "Los Angeles" and even a Russian form of the show. But now, the famous scripted series will head in a whole new direction for the franchise, which has never really been done before.
Given the immense popularity of reality style of TV shows, the franchise has opted for this new spinoff to follow that format. But NBC is taking it one step further and making the new show a live event, apparently every week.
NBC has been trying for quite some time now to push for more live programming. Following creator Dick Wolf's proposal for the spinoff, it seemed liked their golden opportunity to usher in the new "live" format push for the network. It could also be pioneering a new trend for the industry, with other popular shows to follow, potentially.
The live format will also allow the audience to interact with the show, allowing the viewers to serve as the jury in the courtroom reality drama series.
The title is fitting considering the format and intent for the show. But it is unclear how voting will occur, whether it be via social media or call-in votes like the Fox reality competition "American Idol."
The network officially bought the series back in May and the production team behind it has been fine tuning the different areas and main tenets of the show. It will be a one-hour series for the network, but there has been no word yet when it will debut for broadcast.
