Season 6 of "Blue Bloods" has cast "ER" alum Anthony Edwards in a guest role for the upcoming run of the series on CBS. According to Yahoo! TV, his role on the show may or may not be as a doctor, but he will be somewhat wealthy.

One thing that has been confirmed is that his character will not be a reprisal in any way from that of Mark Green on "ER," given that character was killed off. But his unique acting talents have an extraordinary ability to draw empathy from the audience, and that is one the reasons that he was cast in the role of Owen Cairo.

"We offered [the role] to Anthony, our first choice, because he's a terrific actor with an innate talent for drawing empathy and relatability from the audience," executive producer Kevin Wade said. "We are thrilled that he's joining us for this story."

What is already known about the character is that he crosses paths with Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) and Baez (Marisa Ramirez) when his prize possession gets stolen. That possession turns out to be the 1968 Mustang that was said to be driven by Steve McQueen in the movie "Bullitt."

Cairo will be a square type of man who's life is more or less turned upside down when he loses the car, which had become so endearing to him. He will be portrayed as a stolid personality who remains calm and cool in the face of his adversity.

The motives for the theft seem to be cut and dry for Cairo, who believes his beautiful young wife arranged for the heist. But that will eventually turn out to be a little more complicated than fans may think.

The official launch to Season 6 of "Blue Bloods" on CBS will be next Friday, on Sept. 25 at 10 p.m. EDT.
