Lady Gaga is known for her outlandish music videos, but her latest video for the Diane Warren-penned tune "Til It Happens To You" is one with a powerful message and a clear purpose: to shine light on sexual assault on college campuses.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the video was directed by Catherine Hardwicke, whose résumé includes the films "Thirteen," "Twilight" and "Lords of Dogtown." It also stars celebrities like Kiersey Clemons from the film "Dope" and "Twilight" star Nikki Reed.

The video follows several young women who experience sexual assault in different places on campus, like at a party or in a dorm room. It then shows the aftermath of their experiences and what sexual assault does to victims, displaying interior thoughts as phrases written on their bodies like "I am worthless" and "Sometimes I hate myself." Toward the end of the video, though, these victims are able to stand up and unite with loved ones to overcome their pain.

Because the video's content deals with such a highly emotional topic, a message at the beginning of the video reads, "The following contains graphic content that may be emotionally upsetting but reflects the reality of what is happening daily on college campuses."

Gaga, who contributed the song to the 2015 documentary titled "The Hunting Ground" about the growing number of college rapes, shared her support for victims of sexual assault on Twitter.

"We hope you feel our love & solidarity through the song & perhaps find some peace in knowing u r not alone through this film," she tweeted.

While the video's message itself is a positive contribution, according to Time, proceeds from the song's sales will also be donated to various organizations that work to help survivors of sexual assault.
