WWE: Carlito Returning to World Wrestling Entertainment?
It looks like WWE will add another former superstar to the current roster. Court Bauer and Konnan claims that Carlito is close to returning, as discussed in Major League Wrestling Radio. Wrestling Inc reports that WWE is looking for a Hispanic star that will replace the vacated spot Alberto Del Rio and Rey Mysterio left.
Carlito was released by the WWE on May 21, 2010 after failing the Wellness Policy and refusing to enter a rehabilitation facility for painkiller addiction. As per Bleacher Report, Carlito's father Carlos Colon Sr. confirmed that his son was addicted to painkillers due to knee and back problems. The legendary Puerto Rican wrestler said that these problems were caused by his finisher "The Backstabber."
When using the move, Carlito is forced to bear the weight of the opponent on his knees while dropping back first. Other wrestlers like Brian Adams, Rick Rude, Andrew "Test" Martin and Eddie "Umaga" Fatu all died due to painkiller abuse.
Currently, the WWE only has a handful of Hispanic wrestlers in their roster including Kalisto, Sin Cara and The Los Matadores. The matador tag team consists of Carlito's brother Eddie who plays Diego and cousin Orlando who plays Fernando.
The 36-year-old returned to his father's promotion in Puerto Rico after his release in 2010. He briefly returned to WWE in 2014 when he inducted his father to the WWE Hall of Fame. WWE.com caught up with him after the ceremony and asked what it is like being back in WWE for one night.
"It's great seeing a lot of old friends that I haven't seen in a long time, a lot of the boys and people backstage, seeing Mr. McMahon and everyone. It's good to be back for a minute," Carlito answered.
The former U.S. and Intercontinental champion was also asked by Primera Hora if he was willing to go back to the WWE. "It's not because I need a job. I have travelled a lot to wrestle around the world in places like Mexico, Qatar and Australia. However, I would accept going back to WWE. I have no bad feelings with anyone there," the Puerta Rican replied as translated by eWrestling News.
Carlito won the U.S. Title in his WWE debut against John Cena and the Intercontinental Title in his first ever RAW match against Shelton Benjamin. Along with his brother Eddie, who is known as Primo back then, the two are former WWE and World Tag Team champions. The brothers also were the first-ever Unified Tag Team champions after defeating The Miz and John Morrison on WrestleMania 25.
