A vulnerability research and cybersecurity startup is offering up to a $3 million bounty for a successful jailbreak to the new Apple iOS 9 operating system.

This challenge was announced by VUPEN founder Chaouki Bekrar, Threat Post reports. Bekrar started Zerodium, the company offering the reward focused on exploiting Apple's iOS 9.

Bekrar said that the bounty offering will go until Oct. 31 or whenever the total of $3 million is paid out.

"Zerodium will pay out 1 million U.S. dollars to each individual or team who creates and submits to Zerodium an exclusive, browser-based, and untethered jailbreak for the latest Apple iOS 9 operating system and devices," Bekrar said.

To be eligible for payment, submissions must be unique and not use any previously published vulnerabilities. The jailbreak solution must get through the tough security that is found in iOS 9.

"The exploit/jailbreak must lead to and allow a remote, privileged, and persistent installation of an arbitrary app (e.g. Cydia) on a fully updated iOS 9 device," the statement said.

Users must start with a webpage that targets mobile versions of Safari or Chrome. The jailbreak solution can also start from a text message.

"The whole exploitation/jailbreak process should be achievable remotely, reliably, silently, and without requiring any user interaction except visiting a web page or reading a SMS/MMS," Zerodium said.

Other jailbreak solutions that require physical access or must be carried out over Bluetooth or NFC are not eligible for the bounty, Zerodium said. The only devices that will work with this bounty program are the iPhone 5 and newer, iPad Air, Air 2, third-and fourth-generation iPads, and iPad mini 2 and 4.

If the jailbreak submitted to Zerodium is incomplete or a partial jailbreak, it will not be eligible for payment, the company says.
