WWE: Sting's Career Over After Neck Injury at Night of Champions?
Sting was unsuccessful in capturing his first ever WWE championship at Night of Champions, losing to defending champion Seth Rollins after a gruelling match. While applying "The Scorpion Death Lock," Rollins rolled Sting up into a small package for the win.
"The Vigilante" was visibly in pain while applying the submission hold, and, according to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer via What Culture, he suffered an injury to his neck that could end his career. He said, "He hurt his neck, it was a pretty significant injury. It was serious and to his neck."
The injury probably occurred after Rollins power bombed Sting into the turnbuckles, as per DTAM's Twitter post. The 56-year-old veteran was clearly hurt after the move and WWE doctors checked on him. He was even struggling to get to his feet. Rollins mocked the crowd to create some time and eventually went to the planned finish ahead of schedule.
Sting even took an earlier bump outside, crashing into the announcer's table. WWE posted the wild spot on their Twitter account. It probably wasn't a good idea for a 56-year-old legend to take dangerous bumps like that even though Sting is in a very good shape for his age.
TMZ Sports has learned that doctors were unable to give a long-term prognosis for Sting's recovery. The WCW Icon was released from the hospital Monday afternoon and flew home to Texas. TMZ sources said that doctors did a full CAT scan at the hospital, but there were no fractures. He was also able to walk without help but was in significant pain.
Sting's manager Steve Martinez released a statement regarding his client's health on The Real Sting's Facebook account, saying, "As many of you may already know, Sting is undergoing treatment for the injuries he sustained in last night's match with Seth Rollins. Doctors will continue to evaluate his condition, but he is a man of remarkable health and resiliency, especially at his age and with all he's endured throughout his stellar career. Therefore, we are optimistic he will have a speedy recovery and return to full health soon. Sting has kept his body in excellent shape, due largely to the guidance he's received from his personal trainer Jeff Cavaliere (ATHLEAN-X), and we trust this will prove beneficial to the recovery process. As a side note, we later learned the greatest damage to his body took place before the match was over, but being the true professional he is and among the hardest workers to ever step foot in the ring, he insisted to see the match through to the end."
WWE also confirmed the injury on their website, but no other details were added. Sting is one of the greatest wrestlers in history, and you just have to admire the fact that he finished the match even though he is in apparent pain.
