"The Big Short" has released its first trailer and it features an all-star cast of some of today's biggest and most accomplished stars.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film stars Christian Bale, Brad Pitt, Melissa Leo, Marisa Tomei, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Finn Wittrock. But it's the cast and story behind the film that makes it quite a contender for next year's Oscar race to the top.

The film itself dropped a surprise release date this year of Dec. 11 in a limited run and Dec. 23 for wide-release.

It is about the players behind the worldwide economic meltdown that lasted from 2007 - 2010. The true story is taken directly from Michael Lewis's best-selling novel and has already received critical appraise.

The main characters of the film are the four outsiders who saw what the media and other official entities refused to see. That being said, they ran with the titular idea and in the end, became hefty profiteers off the financial collapse.

The idea itself led them into investments that essentially were the dark underbelly of the banks at the time and their predictions really paid off.

The film wasn't expected to hit theaters until 2016, so the release of the trailer and the new premiere date was a bit of a surprise to fans and industry insiders alike. The debut slot opened up when Oliver Stone's film "Snowden" was moved out of the Christmas opening and delayed until 2016. But that doesn't mean it won't have some hefty box-office competition with the massive "Star Wars" film coming out on the holiday season as well.

The film itself is looking to cash in on Oscar buzz, which means that even if it doesn't open to big numbers, it is likely to get people into seats on the early winter market.
