Last Saturday’s winning numbers were 12, 17, 26, 43, 48 and 24. There were 780,485 regular winners, and $16,790,956 in non-jackpot money was won.

There are actually nine ways to play Powerball. Though the odds will likely change in October, currently there is a 1 in 175,223,510.00 chance of winning the grand prize and a 1 in 5,153,632.65 chance of winning $1,000,000.

Lottery winners tend to go on big vacations or buy new houses after they cash out, but a man from New Castle, Virginia has a more urgent and noble way to spend his newfound fortune. As reported by local NBC affiliate WSLS News, Billy Aliff, who will be getting a $2 million payout, says he plans on using the money to help his father battle cancer.

“He’s in the hospital and undergoing chemo,” said Aliff, who plans to quit his job as well.

Aliff’s method of playing Powerball is decidedly relaxed. “On Saturdays I play my three dollars and I pick my own numbers by random,” he said, adding, “My daughters always think it’s funny, because I always close my eyes and pick them.”

The new millionaire seems to have a genuine awareness of how his life will change now that he is loaded, saying, “I hope it makes it easier, but I know with money comes a whole lot of responsibility.”
