‘Charlie’s Angels’ Getting a Film Reboot
Although "Charlie's Angels" has already been rebooted twice following the 1981 cancellation of the original series, the franchise is getting another film reboot that reportedly has Elizabeth Banks attached to the project.
According to Deadline, Banks is in talks to both produce and direct the reboot film for the franchise following her success with the sequel film "Pitch Perfect 2," which she also directed.
The original story '70s TV series received great ratings in the beginning, but also saw a steady decline over time and was subsequently cancelled in 1981 due to poor viewership.
The series starred actresses Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith in the main three roles for the show. It was premised off a sexist era of policing, when a millionaire named Charlie hired the trio of ladies to come in and serve as private investigators for him. Charlie was never seen on screen and the ladies only spoke to him on the telephone. But they did frequently interact with his assistant John Bosley.
The first incarnation of a reboot came in 2000 when McG revived the franchise for a film adaptation that starred Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu. It also co-starred Bill Murray in the role of Bosley.
The film did very well at the box-office, drawing in more than $264 million worldwide. This gave them enough momentum to get the green light for a sequel, which was "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle." That film did not perform as well and the franchise was shelved.
Another reboot was attempted for TV back in 2011, but ABC cancelled it after only four episodes.
There has been no word yet which actresses will be filling the role of the main three characters, nor when production will begin on the project. This is also not a TV project, but another film reboot adaptation.
