The collective response regarding the new "Super Mario Maker" game for the Wii U has been massively positive and has boasted an experience that both avid fans of the "Mario" series and average gamers can both enjoy, however that isn't to say it hasn't come without its faults.

Hardcore fans of the "Mario" games will be more likely to point some of these out in "Super Mario Maker," as attention to detail goes a long way with this market.

Nintendo World Report

A review from Nintendo World Report makes note of the game's inability to include all of the features found in the 2-D games.

"The possibilities for creation are vast, but if you're familiar with 2D Mario games, it's not quite the endless array of possibilities that we might have hoped for. It's missing a wide variety of enemies and power-ups (No Charging Chucks, no Rexes, no Penguin Suit, no Frog Suit, etc.) from each of the art styles. You can't make slopes. You can't add in locked doors or secret exits. You can't string together levels to make your own world. The tools present in the game right now are still immense, creative, and fun and a lot of the limitations and absences make some sense, but it's still ultimately disappointing."

Digital Spy

The minor lack of customization may have truly been implemented to not overwhelm the less experienced players, as Digital Spy notes that player's are often limited by their imagination.

"While you are slightly restricted by the toolset, there's plenty there to play around with. The only other restriction is in a level's memory - you can only place so much, which often leads to people creating short levels crammed with blocks and enemies."

BGR

BGR comments on how "Super Mario Maker" doesn't give players all the tools in the beginning, as they want newer gamers to get accustomed to the creation mode.

"When you load up the game for the very first time, you'll be dumped straight into the creation mode. The toolset is extremely limited at first, but it's important to learn the ropes before you start trying to combine elements from every type of Mario level you've ever played. Super Mario Maker doesn't give you all the tools right away anyway."

Game FAQs

While Nintendo may have believed this to be advantageous to newer players, there are many average consumers that disagree with the limitation. Some consumer reviews on Game FAQs stated the following:

"If there are some flaws I noticed, it's a bit limited in terms of level search. And although it may be a good idea for the sake of being too overwhelming, I would have preferred that all of the tools be unlocked from the start rather then on an "as you play" basis." - YOYOLEFTTORITE

"Although I have constantly saying how good this game is, I dislike a handful of features: For one there is the 9 day limit: play 5 minutes a day and you unlock new things the next day, but there is a work around which is changing the consoles time. Also, at the start you can only upload 10 levels, and the more stars you earn, you earn more uploads, while this is annoying, there is a good reason: to prevent trolls from uploading so many "troll" levels. Thats about all I dislike however." - SMEARGLE123
