A newborn child was found dead Monday afternoon, apparently thrown by her mother from the seventh story of a Bronx apartment building.

CBS News reports that police were called to 130 West 183rd Street in University Heights with reports of an unconscious individual. They discovered the body of the baby girl at the scene with the umbilical cord still attached. EMS pronounced the infant dead soon after.

According to NY Daily News, authorities quickly identified 33-year-old Jennifer Berry as the mother of the child.

Berry first denied having been pregnant, but soon admitted the child was hers, although she claims the baby died during birth. She told investigators that she delivered the infant in the shower. Once she realized the newborn wasn't breathing, she tossed it out the window to the courtyard below.

"The baby looked like it was new, it was on the floor covered in blood," said Sammy Batista, who saw the scene from his apartment window. "It was terrible. It hurt my heart."

Detectives also questioned the alleged father of the child, 28-year-old husband Giovanni Johnson, who adamantly denied having any knowledge that Berry was pregnant. Johnson claimed Berry told him she had an abortion months earlier. The couple already have a 3-year-old son together.

"He's a good guy," Tiffany Martinez said of Johnson to CBS. "Every time I see him, he's with his son. He's a good man. From what I've seen, they always look like a happy family."

Of the mother, Martinez could only express shock and incredulity.

"If you went, 'I don't want this baby, I'm gonna toss it out the window?' That's just ridiculous," she said.

Authorities are waiting on the results of the autopsy to determine the cause of death. In the mean time, no arrests have been made. Charges are pending for Berry, who was taken to the hospital for examination after the incident.
