Samsung Pay is live and ready for use in the U.S. with Samsung phones and the soon-to-be released Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch.

Right off the bat, Samsung Pay has an advantage over Apple Pay: it will work on older terminals that don't support Apple Pay, CNet reports.

Samsung Pay will allow owners of the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, Note 5 and S6 Edge+ smartphones running on wireless networks from AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and US Cellular to pay for items. Verizon is not yet supported to utilize Samsung Pay yet, but Samsung and Verizon are working on it. Verizon was trying to create their own mobile payments service, but Google Wallet and Android Pay bought them out.

"Samsung Pay works with almost any card terminal from day one and Galaxy owners can shop with a wallet they never knew was always in their hands," Injong Rhee, head of Samsung Pay, said in a press release

Samsung Pay will work just like Apple Pay, where users will wave their device in front of a terminal rather than sliding a card through it.

Samsung believes they have the advantage with their service because it can be used almost anywhere that has a credit card terminal. It will use near-field communication (NFC) just like Apple Pay, but it will also use Magnetic Secure Transmission where users will hold up their phones near an older, traditional credit card swipe reader, making it compatible with almost any terminal. Apple Pay requires NFC technology and merchants are still trying to equip themselves with it.

"The responses we're getting from customers are really phenomenal," Rhee said last week during an event hosted by Visa in San Francisco. "It really exceeds our highest expectations. We're seeing thousands of users signing up per day and activating Samsung Pay."
