The new DC superhero film "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" has officially been rated by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and achieved the goal it set out to do.

There is no doubt that the dark superhero film is bound, by all expectations, to be disturbing in some cases. Such was the case in "The Dark Knight." But there are several key factors that they can use to plow their rating down from the constrictive box-office fare of an R rating to get the much more coveted PG-13.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the producers seem to have achieved their goal and the MPAA has officially released a PG-13 rating for the film, with reasons described as "intense sequences of violence and action throughout, and some sensuality."

There is no doubt the dark nature of the film and the merging of the two superhero universes will be bring about some themes that are more suitable for adults, but it usually holds just enough back that parents will take their kids to see the movie and it turns into a family affair.

"The Dark Knight" trilogy used the same techniques and scored very well at the box office -- the second film broke many records at the time.

Marvel's Cinematic Universe has also used the same recipe, but they are generally known to have lighter themes for the superheroes with less "dark" content.

"Batman v Superman" will star Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in a big-screen showdown expected to be an official prequel to the "Justice League" movies and a sequel to the 2013 "Man of Steel" film by director Zack Snyder.

The DC Cinematic Universe is also expected to have some standalone films come out over the next several years that will likely employ the same concept to obtain a PG-13 rating. Those include "Wonder Woman," "Aquaman," "The Flash" and "Green Lantern."
