'Serial' Podcast to Receive TV Adaptation
The phenomenally popular podcast series "Serial" is making the move to television.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, multi-talented creators Phil Lord and Christopher Miller will be developing a cable adaptation of the true crime drama that had listeners buzzing last fall. The duo are working in tandem with Fox 21 Television Studios.
"Serial" producer and show host Sarah Koenig and executive producer Julie Snyder were impressed by Lord and Miller, who have had their hand in writing, directing and producing a number of recent film and television successes, including "Last Man on Earth," "The Lego Movie" and "21 Jump Street."
"Chris and Phil take an unexpected approach to telling stories and that is so appealing to us at 'Serial,'" Snyder said. "They experiment. They don't mimic formulas. Developing a show with them is exciting because we feel like we speak the same language, only they're smarter than us."
Although the details of the cable series have not been announced, it will not focus on the Adnan Syed case chronicled in the series' first season.
"Serial" originated as a spin off of NPR's "This American Life" program. The show was a smash hit, becoming the fastest podcast to reach 5 million downloads in November 2014. As of September 2015, the podcast has over 97 million downloads.
"This American Life" producers Alissa Shipp and Ira Glass will also be involved in the project.
Fox 21 Television Studios expressed their excitement over the project.
"Thanks to the incredible passion of Chris and Phil, who flew to New York and shared their vision with Sarah, Julie, Alissa and Ira for what the series could be, we're moving forward on this exciting project," studio president Bert Salke told CNBC. "What you have here is a 'once every ten years creative storytelling phenom' with a 'once in ten years take' with a 'once in twenty-five years creative team.'"
