Breaking: 14 Dead as US Military Plane Crashes in Afghanistan
At least 14 people were killed - including six American service members - when a C-130 U.S. cargo plane crashed at Jalalabad Airfield, Afghanistan on the wee hours of Friday, the U.S. Military confirmed.
Along with the six American service members who served as the plane crew, five civilian contractors and at least three local Afghans on ground were killed, an ABC News report says. Nationalities of the civilian contractors, who worked for a NATO-led operation that trains Afghan security forces, are yet to be identified.
According to a Los Angeles Times report, the plane crash occurred at exactly 12:19 a.m. local time near the Afghan-Pakistani border. Two officials told ABC News that the cargo plane was about to land when it suddenly crashed in Jalalabad Airfield. The airfield was mainly reserved for U.S. Military activities.
The cause of the crash is yet to be known. Although Reuters reports that there were no signs of enemy fire nor any other hostilities, Army Col. Brian Tribus told CNN that the military is still continuing its investigation and gathers more information regarding the sudden crash.
Reuters also reports that a U.S. Military spokesman has still refused the possibility of more fatalities and casualties as there can possibly more lying on the ground.
"It was a serious crash," a defense official told Fox News. The official added that it was not sure which branch of the U.S. Military, whether Air Force or Marine Corps, was flying the cargo plane.
Los Angeles Times reports that C130 cargo plane is managed by the 774th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron and is a part of the 455th Air Expeditionary Wing at Bagram Airfield based in Afghanistan. Subsequently, Reuters reports that a statement released by the Bagram Air Base described the mishap as "an accident" without providing additional details.
Reuters also adds that the plane "accident" occurred just hours after the Talibans and Afghan troops clashed in the city of Kunduz on Thursday.
No other information was released as of writing.
Manufactured by Lockheed Martin, the C130 is a four-propeller cargo plane and is the most contemporary kind of aircraft equipped with highly sophisticated navigational gears. Mainly, the aircraft is used in and out war zones.
C-130 aircraft was deployed for its maiden flight in the 1950s and has been a great player in the entire American war history. The doomed aircraft was also used for refueling, surveillance and firefighting, New York Times reports.
