McDonald's Launches All Day Breakfast
After years of frequent requests from customers, McDonald's finally launched an all-day breakfast menu on Tuesday.
The Chicago Tribune reports that the fast food giant is now offering menu items like hotcakes and Egg McMuffins throughout the day, no longer abiding by the 10:30 a.m. cut-off that so often frustrated hungry breakfast lovers in the past.
It's a major move and perhaps a necessary compromise for the iconic fast food company. Although McDonald's has claimed for years that an all-day breakfast menu would be far too difficult to implement, recent difficulties have forced the company's hand.
According to Time, McDonald's has been rapidly losing business from millennials, who frequently opt to dine at healthier, higher quality "fast casual" restaurants like Chipotle and Panera Bread. This has forced McDonald's to engage in costly initiatives, such as expansive menu changes, which may not only be largely unsuccessful, but can also slow down operations and cause frustration among franchise owners.
The company has also struggled to combat its worsening reputation. More than any other restaurant, McDonald's has become a symbol for American consumerism, capitalism and obsession with unhealthy food.
Even the company's immensely popular breakfast menu has faced recent competition from fast food rivals like Taco Bell.
Although all-day breakfast has been very well received by customers so far, it's important to note the specific McDonald's breakfast items that will be made available past the traditional cutoff. The core items will consist of hotcakes, sausage burritos, hash browns, oatmeal and yougurt parfaits.
Controversially, the company also made the decision to offer the classic McMuffin instead of biscuit sandwiches in 80 percent of its locations throughout the country. Biscuits are only offered in lieu of McMuffins in the South due to the popularity of biscuits in the region.
