Juan Manuel Marquez Next Fight: 'Dinamita' Won't Return Until 2016
Mexican boxing icon Juan Manuel "Dinamita" Marquez has firmly decided not to stage his comeback fight this year and may not return on the ring in 2016.
The veteran fighter, who was last seen coming out of a unanimous victory against Mike Alvarado in May 2014 at the Forum in Inglewood, per BoxRec, shared why fans should not expect him fighting before 2015 ends, Boxing Scene noted.
"I do not know if I will return, but I can tell you that I'm a fighter who likes to train for three or four months to prepare for a fight and there is only a month and a half left to December, so you could say that I'm not going to fight this year," Marquez said in a press conference in Mexico.
The recent statement from "Dinamita" may have disappointed several fans, who are patiently waiting for an announcement regarding a proposed fight involving the four-time division world champion, especially as he initially intended to return this fall, per a World Boxing News article in June.
The 42-year-old warrior was even sure that he still has the "hunger" inside him that fuels him into seeking more fights. "Dinamita," who described himself as a "fighter with the heart and the mentality of a fighter," shared that he still longs to earn that fifth championship before he retires.
Thus, the fighter, who suffered from a kneecap injury, reportedly planned to rehabilitate it well to be back in the game in the course of "one and a half to two months."
"For me hunger for success is the most telling factor...So firstly I need to recover, second find a rival and then war! If everything goes well, I'm planning to fight again in October or November," the Mexican fighter said.
In June, retirement was not an option for the seasoned fighter. "Dinamita's" conditioning coach Angel "Memo" Heredia confirmed his boxer's desire to continue in the game for two more fights, Boxing Scene noted.
"I talked to him and he said that he wants to do two more fights. One in the U.S. then one farewell fight in Mexico before he retires," Heredia said.
No more Pacquiao-Marquez 5?
However, with his recent declaration in the press, there's a chance that his fight against Alvarado could be his last, as "Dinamita" himself admits that he doesn't know if he will come back again.
Marquez may now be really out of the mix of possible foes for his arch enemy and eight-time division champion Manny Pacquiao when the Filipino icon stages his comeback next year, despite boxing coach Freddie Roach wanting him for "Pacman," per a separate Boxing Scene report.
