With "Fifty Shades Darker" still not in production and with over a year until the release of the sequel, fans will need to wait to see if they are satisfied with what Universal is producing. For those not interested in waiting another year for this film, the following is a list of other erotic thrillers that could satisfy fans while they wait.

"Shame" - Back in 2011 Steve McQueen's second feature shocked audiences at the Venice Film Festival for its outstanding approach to sex addiction. Lead actor Michael Fassbender went on to win the Best Actor award at the Festival and later was nominated for the Golden Globe. The film follows Brandon, a sex addict whose life is disrupted when his sister arrives at his home for an indefinite time period. When it was released the film was rated NC-17 for its sexual content and as a result its theatrical run was limited.

"Nymphomaniac Part 1 and 2" - For those interested in an epic about another sex addict, Lars von Trier's epic features a number of intense sex scenes and a number of incredibly dramatic moments that will leave audiences shocked well after they see it. The feature, starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, where it scored mixed reviews. The movie's theatrical run went unnoticed as Magnolia decided to release the film on VOD as well as theaters due to its subject matter. Despite all of the sex and depravity, there is a real human story that will keep audiences captivated.

"Blue Is the Warmest Color" - This film, which won the Palme D'Or at the Cannes Film festival, caused a stir in the festival circuit and among audiences for its seven-minute sex scene. Although director Abdellatif Kechiche was accused for not understanding Lesbian sex and for mistreating his actresses on set, the lesbian drama starring Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux was among the most acclaimed films of 2013. One of the most interesting aspects of the release was that although the MPAA rated it NC-17, the IFC Center in New York avoided the rating and allowed all audiences to go and see it.

"Last Tango in Paris" - Bernardo Bertolucci's erotic thriller was incendiary when it was released back in 1972 as it featured explicit sex scenes. The movie starring Marlon Brando tells the story of a young Parisian woman who is forced into a sexual relationship with a middle-aged man. Rated NC-17, the film was still among the most acclaimed by the director and it went on to get nominated for two Oscars including Best Director and Best Actor for Brando.

"Young and Beautiful" - Francois Ozon's thriller is not quite as explicit or controversial as the films listed above. However, it is still provocative and sensual as it depicts a teen who decides to explore her sexuality by working as a prostitute. Having premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, the movie's theatrical run was short lived due to its lackluster marketing. "Young and Beautiful" features a wonderful performance from its leading actress Marine Vacth.
