‘King Kong vs Godzilla’ Release Date, News: Monster Film Gets Official Confirmation
The epic battle between two famous movie monsters is finally returning to the big screen, as "King Kong vs. Godzilla" recently received its long awaited release date and official confirmation.
According to Deadline, "King Kong vs. Godzilla" has been officially set for a 2020 release, following a trio of films to be released before the epic match-up.
As fans already know, Warner Bros. released the most recent version of "Godzilla" in 2014 with some modest success. The next film to be released will be "Kong: Skull Island" in 2017, which has gone through a rough patch with delays due to major stars backing out of the project. Of course, those problems were back before the planned merger between the two monster series, which may expand into a new cinematic universe for the studio.
The next film to be released after "Skull Island" will be the "Godzilla" sequel, which will bow on June 8, 2018 and will be the last movie to set up the epic merger film for the two franchises.
It is still unclear at this time if the upcoming series will take the 2005 Peter Jackson "King Kong" film as source material, or if the new movies will completely reinvented the story from scratch.
It was announced back in September that "Skull Island" would switch studios to Warner Bros. in order to set up the big screen monster crossover down the line.
There has also been no word yet about a solution to the problem of contradictory film settings, as the original "King Kong" story took place during the Great Depression, while the current incarnation of "Godzilla" is set in modern times. There is also the relative sizes of the two mega monsters to consider, with Godzilla being much larger than his foe.
