This Halloween there will be a lot of trick-or-treaters in Mexico dressed up as escaped drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzmán.

As reported by the Associated Press, Diego Esponda, the CEO of costume maker Caretas REV, said that masks of the prison-proof cartel king are a hot item.

So far this month, his company has produced over 2,600 "El Chapo" masks. A good number of the masks are headed north to the United States and Canada.

With drugs and murder linked to his Sinaloa organization, the 60-year-old cartel boss might seem an unlikely costume choice for kids going house to house for candy. Esponda chalks up demand for the mask to Guzmán's mythic status, saying, "It's kind of funny, isn't it: We captured him twice and he escapes twice, right?"

The executive remarked that the popularity of the “El Chapo” mask is also a kind of critique of the government, saying, "So, you know, we aren't glorifying anybody. On the contrary, I think this is a wake-up call to the government, which captures him and then he escapes."

Guzmán's recent prison break was the stuff of movies.

As previously reported, new leaked audio reveals that when Guzmán escaped from his cell through a hole in the bathroom, the guards were caught completely unaware. The Business Insider reports that there is new evidence suggesting that when Guzmán emerged from an underground escape tunnel, he had a private plane waiting for him.

Hector Bustos, a designer for Caretas REV, said the idea of making a costume based on “El Chapo” started out as a dark joke.

Aside from "El Chapo," another popular costume this year is Donald Trump, the leading GOP presidential candidate, whom “El Chapo” famously threatened through social media shortly after he escaped from his cell.

"The Donald Trump one is also selling very well in the United States," Esponda said. "I mean, he is the most hated person right now in Mexico."
