'Thor: Ragnarok' Casting Rumors: Incredible Hulk to Join God of Asgard in Third Movie
The Incredible Hulk was supposed to be in "Captain America: Civil War," but he got left out. Now the green hero will team up instead with the thunder god in the third installment of the "Thor" series.
According to Variety, Mark Ruffalo, who plays the Hulk in the "Avengers" franchise, is currently negotiating to be in the new film, which will be a road trip of sorts for the two superheroes.
This is the first time in the franchise another hero will team up with Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth, in one of the Norse hero's titular movies. Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) made a brief appearance in the first "Thor" movie, but none of the other heroes has partnered with the protagonist on his adventures.
Fans of the Hulk have suffered disappointment, as the superhero has not had a standalone film since 2008's "The Incredible Hulk," which starred Edward Norton. Ruffalo has yet to get his own film as Bruce Banner.
Meanwhile, Marvel has been rather liberal with teaming up superheroes in other stand alone films. Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) first showed up in "Iron Man 2" and was a central figure in "Captain America: Winter Soldier." "Captain America: Civil War" has taken this trend to the extreme, turning into an "Avengers" team-up movie in all but name.
Ruffalo was seen on the set of "Captain America: Civil War" but ultimately got left out the film. It is worth noting that almost every single superhero in the Marvel universe is making an appearance in that film. However, like the Hulk, there is one other major hero missing: Thor.
"Thor: Ragnarok" will be directed by Taika Waititi. The script for the new movie is by Christopher Yost and Craig Kyle. Hemsworth will reprise his role as Thor. Tom Hiddleston will be back as Loki and Jaimie Alexander will return as Sif. There no word yet on who else might star in the next installment.
