Ohio Residents Mistake Murdered Woman’s Body for Halloween Decoration; Police Identify Woman
Police have identified an Ohio woman who was found hanging from a fence earlier this week, which spectators initially thought was a Halloween prank.
During a news conference on Wednesday, Chillicothe Police Chief Keith Washburn identified the woman as 31-year-old Rebecca J. Cade of Chillicothe. He said her body was found attached to a chain-link fence near an American Electric Power construction site in the small town on Tuesday morning. However, some neighbors and construction workers in the area initially thought her slain body was a gruesome Halloween prop, WKRC-TV reported.
"It was straight out of a horror story," said Tammy Dixon, who saw Cade's body hanging on a fence, told WCPO-TV.
Police say Cade was desperately trying to flee her suspected killer when her sleeve had become caught on a barbed wire fence while she was trying to climb over it, reports the Columbus Dispatch.
Cade's cause of death is listed as blunt force trauma to the head and neck. Police also found "defensive wounds" on the victim's arms. Police added that they suspect that a bloody "large rock the size of an orange or grapefruit" found at the scene may have been the murder weapon.
By Tuesday evening, police arrested Donnie Cochenour, 27, in connection with Cade's murder. Chillicothe Law Director Sherri Rutherford said Cochenour admitted that he and Cade had engaged in a physical altercation near the murder scene. He is being held in jail on a $2 million bond.
Meanwhile, grieving relatives say Cade was a struggling mom, who had past run-ins with the law.
"Rebecca didn't deserve that, what happened to her," Cade's cousin, Denise Hughes, told the Columbus Dispatch. Hughes also admitted that Cade made many mistakes in her life and that she's been raising Cade's 15-month-old son, who was born with symptoms of fetal alcohol syndrome.
"She was always running the streets and always doing the drugs, but she had people who loved her," she said. "I hope she knew that."
