'Scandal' Season 5 Episode 5 Spoilers: President Fitz Faces Impeachment [Watch]
In the upcoming episode of “Scandal,” the ramifications of a long awaited romance between Olivia (Kerry Washington) and President Fitzgerald (Tony Goldwyn) have led to a crisis at the White House.
A clip from Episode 5 of Season 5, called “You Got Served,” shows the President panicking before the possibility of a potential impeachment, which he at first does not even believe can happen.
“I have done nothing wrong, and I certainly haven’t committed any impeachable offences,” Fitz nearly screams at a Washington attorney who informs him that he will need a lawyer.
The Commander in Chief is then schooled about what constitutes an “impeachable offence.”
“This isn’t a normal trial, Mr. President. It‘s a political trial,” he is informed. “Congress is prosecutor, and judge, and jury. They decide what an impeachable offence is and they decide if you have committed one."
In the episode, Olivia understands that she cannot deal with all this chaos on her own and looks for help from an unexpected source, while the president’s wife, Mellie (Bellamy Young), and Cyrus (Jeff Perry) keep on controlling everything from behind the scenes.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Shonda Rhimes, the creator of the hit series, spoke about the impetus she felt to finally let Olivia and Fitz get together, and to see what kind of drama would unfold, saying, “I found myself really inspired by the idea of what would really happen if we let everything change for real.”
As fans will attest, the results of this adulterous romance have been messy and not at all what anyone might have expected.
Young, the actress who plays the jilted First Lady on the political thriller, mentioned how hard it was to truly find fault with Olivia’s new role as the President’s mistress, saying, “It would be so much easier to vilify the other woman, but it’s hard to vilify because it’s Olivia Pope,” adding, “everyone’s a little in love with Olivia Pope.”
The next episode of “Scandal” airs Thursday, Oct. 22nd on ABC at 9 p.m ET.
