Chocolatito Next Fight: Roman Gonzalez To Defend Title Against Filipino Champ Donnie Nietes?
Nicaraguan world champion Roman Gonzalez could cross path with another Filipino challenger, as reports indicated that "Chocolatito" could eventually face Donnie Nietes.
Gonzalez, who successfully defended his World Boxing Council flyweight title against Brian Viloria on Saturday in New York, is considering several options for his next fight.
Promoter Michael Aldeguer, who is representing Nietes, said in an interview with Ring TV that he had preliminary talks with K2 Promotions about a possible showdown between Gonzalez and Nietes.
Based on how the discussion ran, Aldeguer, president of ALA Promotions, believes that K2 Promotions is also interested in staging the fight.
"We had a discussion," Aldeguer confirmed. "We'll resume the talks again. Nietes wants the fight. I think they also want the fight."
Nietes also successfully defended his World Boxing Organization light flyweight title with a unanimous decision win against Juan Alejo during their 12-round showdown on Saturday at StubHub Center in Carson, California.
The 33-year-old Filipino, who has not surrendered the WBO light flyweight title since winning the belt against Ramon Hirales in 2011, improved his record to 37-1 with 21 knockout victories.
After both Nietes and Gonzalez passed their recent challenges, most boxing analysts are looking forward to the showdown between the two champions. However, Aldeguer hinted that fans might wait a bit longer because they are not planning to rush things up.
Aldeguer said that Nietes will likely have two more fights to prepare for a possible title bout against Gonzalez either in October next year or in early 2017.
"We're looking at late next year or early 2017," Aldeguer said. "Nietes is a 108 now. He has to gradually move up to 112 to fight Chocolatito. Hopefully in October, if we can get things done for Chocolatito then we'll do it in October."
On the other hand, Gonzalez is also being linked to a rematch with Juan Francisco Estrada. Gonzalez, who improved his record to 44-0 with 38 knockouts, won against Estrada via unanimous decision during their light flyweight world title fight in November 2012.
Estrada, who has a 33-2 record with 24 of his victories coming by way of knockout, is the reigning World Boxing Association and World Boxing Organization flyweight champion. The 25-year-old Mexican is coming off a 10th-round knockout win against Hernan Marquez on Sept. 26 in Sonora, Mexico.
