Jennifer Lawrence Wage Gap Essay: 'American Hustle' Director David Russell Says He 'Supports' JLaw
Count one in on Jennifer Lawrence's growing anti-sexism army.
Days after "American Hustle's" Jeremy Renner spoke out regarding the Oscar-winning actress' controversial op-ed titled "Why Do I Make Less Than My Male Co‑Stars?" and said that it isn't his job to help female co-actors negotiate their pay, "American Hustle" director David O. Russell has given his support to her female lead character.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday during a fundraiser dinner for The Glenholme School in New York City, the 57-year-old director said that he supports not just Lawrence but all other women who are in pursuit of gender equality in Hollywood.
"I always support all my actors and all their opinions, and I want them all to get what they need," the Academy Award nominee said. "I don't really talk about the minutia of what goes on in my movies, but I believe the spirit of what Jennifer is saying is truthful to her heart. I support her and all women in that."
The director has also said that he completely understands what Lawrence has been fighting for and he was sure that other actors in Hollywood get what Lawrence has been trying to get across.
"But I also respect that Jennifer is finding her voice, and I think it's in service of something very important," the director added. He also shared that Lawrence's characteristics are exactly the same as what she portrays in their new movie, Joy, saying that Lawrence shows "maturity" and she is "learning what it is to have your own space and express your own voice to have power."
Russell has been the third person involved in the movie that has shelled out his opinion regarding Lawrence's essay. While the actress has not blatantly mentioned that the movie she was referring to was "American Hustle," Lawrence has dropped names of her male counterparts who have received sizable amount of profit in the movie.
In the piece, Lawrence mentioned her co-stars Jeremy Renner, Bradley Cooper and Christian Bale as the "lucky people with d--ks" who received a higher pay, as Latin Post previously reported.
While Renner has opted to focus on his craft instead of concentrating on how much his co-actors are receiving, Cooper has showed his support for the 23-year-old actress, saying that he is in one with Lawrence's advocacy and have vowed to actively promote gender equality in his future projects. Bale is yet to give his comment regarding the controversial issue.
