Huawei vs Xiaomi: Mi 5 Maker Loses Status as China's Top Smartphone Company
If you thought Apple versus Samsung was ultra-competitive, wait until you hear about Huawei versus Xiaomi.
The two China-based mobile makers have been constantly going back and forth between first and second place as China's top OEM.
It should be noted that the smartphone market in the Red Dragon country is the biggest in the world. This means there are tons of big brands as well as independent OEMs that are currently selling their mobile devices in China while new competitors keep on popping up.
Naturally, the one sitting at the top of the food chain is the least likely to be eradicated. The title also gives off the impression of prestige so not only does the top company have the biggest sales, but they also draw the largest fan interest for future products.
Now, a new shift of power has occurred between Huawei and Xiaomi. It has been reported that the latter has successfully regained the top spot from its most distinguished rival after an incredible quarter.
According to China-based research company Canalys via Android Headlines, Huawei has improved its sales by 81 percent year-over-year while Xiaomi's stock has been on the decline as of late.
Canalys did not elaborate further on its figures, but tech experts might have correctly guessed all along who has the better year between the two heavyweights.
Smartphones are still Xiaomi's bread and butter, yet the company has branched out to other electronic products such as high-definition TVs and electric motor vehicles. Huawei, on the other hand, had no distractions going into the third quarter of 2015.
Huawei's haul of devices this year include the Honor 7, Honor 7i, Mate S, MediaPad M2 tablet and an Android Wear-based Huawei Watch. Meanwhile, Xiaomi has the Mi Note, Mi Note Pro, Redmi Note 2, Mi 4i and Mi 4c.
Xiaomi wasn't too taken aback by the results. A spokesperson of the company told TechCrunch that the timing of study made the results favorable for Huawei:
"We just released Redmi Note 2 in mid-August and Mi 4c in late September, which means our product lineup went through a transition period in Q3 2015, and we had to ramp up supply gradually to meet demand."
With the third quarter of 2015 now in the books, it will be interesting to see how Huawei maintains its esteemed position and how Xiaomi would respond from its slump.
Huawei is rumored to release the P9 smartphone as well as the Mate 8 and Mate S phablets anytime soon. Meanwhile, Xiaomi is said to be gearing up for the launch of the Mi 5 and Mi Pad 2.
