A 4-year-old girl is dead after an angry motorist fired into another vehicle on an interstate in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Tuesday afternoon.

CNN reports that Illiana "Lily" Garcia was declared dead at the hospital from a gun wound to the head.

Tony D. Torrez, 32, was arrested on Wednesday for the deadly road rage incident. He has multiple charges against him, including an open count of murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, shooting at a motor vehicle and child abuse resulting in death.

The incident began when Alan Garcia attempted to exit the highway with his 7-year-old son and daughter in the backseat. A red Toyota cut across two lanes of traffic and blocked him. Garcia uttered an expletive toward the driver, later identified as Torrez. That's when Torrez weaved around and approached Garcia's vehicle. Garcia attempted to distance himself when Torrez began firing into the car. He fired four shots, one striking 4-year-old Lily in the head.

Later Wednesday morning, homicide detectives received an anonymous tip. The source said Torrez told others he shot the girl because Garcia had tried to run him off the road.

Torrez confessed his actions to authorities.

According to the Albuquerque Journal, a Metropolitan Judge set Torrez's bail at $650,000 cash only, calling the perpetrator's crime one of the "most wanton and atrocious acts in the history of this city."

"If members of the motoring public receive gunfire as a result of slights on the highway, I don't know who is safe," Metropolitan Court Judge Chris Schultz said in court.

Torrez has an extensive criminal history, including other incidents involving guns and road rage. In 2006, Torrez pulled a gun on a driver who was angry that he blocked the exit to a parking garage. He also pointed a gun at his girlfriend in 2008.

Most of Torrez's previous charges were dropped due to insufficient evidence or lack of cooperation from victims and witnesses.
