NBA 2K16, developed by 2K Sports, has already sold over 1 million copies, compared to only 8,000 copies sold of EA Sports' NBA Live 16.

In most sports video games, EA Sports has the market advantage, but not basketball. 2K Sports' NBA 2K16 is absolutely destroying EA Sports' NBA Live 16 as the go-to basketball simulator. NBA Live 16 has fallen below 1 percent of sales of basketball video games, Techno Buffalo reports.

The NBA 2K games have been the preferred basketball game among gamers for years, and 2K Sports continues to improve the series each year. For NBA 2K16, 2K Sports made the My Player career mode even more advanced with help from famed producer Spike Lee. The game also added musical playlists from three popular DJs.

This is the third straight year that NBA 2K has outsold the NBA Live series, with approximately 98 percent of all basketball video game sales are going to NBA 2K games.

Metacritic, a website that averages ratings from a variety of game reviews, gave NBA 2K16 an 87 rating out of 100, while NBA Live 16 only received a 59 rating from the site.

Meanwhile, EA Sports has the only football video game available, thanks to an exclusive rights contract with the NFL for the Madden NFL video game series. For hockey, EA has no competition with its NHL series of games. Soccer has been dominated by EA Sports' FIFA video game, despite strong efforts from Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer.

Besides 2005's NFL 2K5, 2K Sports has not been competitive in other sports games besides basketball.

NBA 2K16 remains immensely popular due to its extreme realism, accurate gameplay, variety of modes and drama-packed My Player career story mode. If 2K Sports keeps making consistent improvements to NBA 2K, the studio will continue to dominate the basketball video game market, and buyers will keep choosing the series over NBA Live games.
