The anticipation for Game of Thrones just keeps growing as we draw nearer to Season 4. Yet, with the excitement also comes some disappointment as the show could be ending sooner than some hoped.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, show co-creators David Beinoff and D.B. Weiss talked about plans to end Game of Thrones after seven or eight seasons.

"We know there's an end somewhere in the seven- or eight-season zone, said Weiss. "It's not something that goes ten, eleven -- it doesn't just keep on going because it can. I think the desire to milk more out of it is what would eventually kill it, if we gave in to that."

The two pointed to Breaking Bad as a reference for a great show with a short run, and said that most quality shows tended to end before they ran out of steam. True enough, most HBO series tend to max out at or less seven seasons. True Blood is wrapping up its seventh and final season soon. The Sopranos had six seasons, and The Wire had five.

Game of Thrones' short run is to be somewhat expected given the fact that the show is catching up quickly with George R.R. Martin's book series. Martin recently sat down with Vanity Fair and told them that it was "alarming."

Still, Beinoff and Weiss are confident that they will figure it out before the show's end.

"The lucky part is that George works with us and he's a producer on the show. Last year we went out to Santa Fe for a week to sit down with him and just talk through where things are going, because we don't know if we are going to catch up, and where exactly that would be. As you were saying before, if you know the ending, then you can lay the groundwork for it. And so we want to know how everything ends. We want to be able to set things up."

Fans will just have to wait and see what happens. In the meantime, check out this 25-minute Season 3 recap trailer to bring you up to speed for Game of Thrones return on April 6.
