New York Mets vs Kansas City Royals: These 5 Players Could Determine Winner of the 2015 World Series
The New York Mets and Kansas City Royals are the last two teams remaining in quest for the 2015 World Series. It's taken a long time, but we're finally here. Hopefully baseball fans will get a long drawn out series between these two teams. Great players make up great teams, and these squads are full of them.
Here are five players who can very well determine the outcome of this World Series.
1. Jacob deGrom
Last year it was Madison Bumgarner, and this year it's Jacob deGrom. DeGrom has been phenomenal for the Mets this season, and it's continued in the postseason. DeGrom is 3-0 this postseason with a 1.8 ERA. He outpitched both Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke in Los Angeles, and he'll be the top pitcher in this World Series. If deGrom continues his winning ways, the Mets should be fine. However, if deGrom stumbles, the Mets could be in some trouble. He'll be starting Game 2, so one team will be leading after he starts.
2. Johnny Cueto
Johnny Cueto has become the biggest hit or miss pitcher in baseball. He took his talents to Kansas City, but it appears as if he left his consistency behind in Cincinnati with the Reds. When Cueto pitches to the best of his abilities, he's an elite ace who can out-duel anyone. However, when he struggles, it's pretty bad. Cueto will be on the mound in Game 2 against deGrom, so we may be in for an all-time great matchup in this one. In case you were wondering, the 29-year-old Dominican is a free agent this offseason.
3. Daniel Murphy
Daniel Murphy has been on an historic hitting streak lately. He's in the record books having hit a home run in six consecutive games now, but can he keep it up? Pitchers are trying to throw around him and low, but Murphy is hitting home runs against them like golf shots off the tee. The Mets offense has definitely improved over the last two months, but if Murphy continues to hit home runs at this rate, this series may be over quickly. Murphy is batting .421 this postseason with 11 RBI, but just 11 home runs and a .81 batting average during the regular season.
4. Yordano Ventura
We throw around the term "clutch" a lot these days, but the fact of the matter is, Yordano Ventura has been Mr. Clutch for the Royals. He pitched great in Game 2 of the World Series last year against the San Francisco Giants allowing just two runs. The young Dominican ace also picked up a huge win in Game 6 to force an all decisive Game 7, which they lost. Although Ventura hasn't been great this postseason, the Royals won each of the two games he started. Ventura will get his chance in Game 3 against Noah Syndergaard in a battle of the fastball pitchers.
5. Yoenis Céspedes
So many great Latin American players continue to grace this game and in the biggest moments. Yoenis Céspedes has proven to be one of the biggest trade deadline additions in MLB history. The Mets are averaging an entire extra run more per game thanks to the Cuban outfielder. A shoulder injury won't keep Céspedes from playing, but some fans are still concerned. Céspedes has hit two home runs this postseason, both of which have come against the Dodgers. This is his first ever World Series appearance and you can bet the Mets would love to re-sign Céspedes this offseason to a new long-term deal.
