Michelle Rodriguez to Star in Gender-Swapping Action Flick 'Tomboy'
Michelle Rodriguez is slated to star alongside Sigourney Weaver in the gender-swapping action flick "Tomboy, A Revengers Tale."
The Hollywood Reporter reveals the "Fast and Furious" star will assume the lead role, an expert male assassin double-crossed by gangsters who is turned into a woman by a nefarious surgeon known as The Doctor.
In time, the newly transformed hit woman sets out on a course of revenge against the doctor, played by Weaver, with the aid of a nurse known as Johnnie, who is also harboring profound secrets.
With filming set to commence in Vancouver on Nov. 9, "Tomboy" will mark the first project Rodriguez has actually headlined in a long time. In recent years, she has become known for her work within large casts in action movies like "Fast and Furious," as well as other productions such as "Avatar" and the "Resident Evil" movie series.
Even before cameras begin to roll, the movie is already sparking widespread debate and controversy in some circles. The group GLAAD recently blasted the movie's purported theme and script.
"We haven't read the script, but it's disappointing to see filmmakers turning what is a life-saving medical procedure for transgender people into a sensationalistic plot device," said Nick Adams, GLAAD's director of programs for transgender media. "We are at a crucial moment in the public's understanding of transgender issues, and stories like these have the potential to undermine the progress we've worked so hard to achieve."
The 37-year-old Rodriguez has also starred in such projects as "Blue Crush," "S.W.A.T.," "Battle Los Angeles," "Machete," and "Machete Kills." She got her big break in 2000 when she starred in the critically acclaimed and independently produced "Girlfight," for which she was awarded several awards highlighting her career debut performance.
