Ultra-modern watches and other wearable gadgets now have a new Android software from Google at their disposal. The Android Wear operating system was announced by Google last Wednesday and is slated to run on a wide selection of smartwatches that are to be released worldwide later this year.

Android watches are less obvious compared to other wearable devices such as Google Glass. The Android watches, like many smartphones run on other software versions, feature the voice activation function. The software features Google Now, a virtual assistant that will calibrate according to a user's regular and favorite searches to prepare essential information instantly.

Apple's rival iWatch contender has leaked the following specs so far:

  • 1.5-inch display
  • "Full" iOS
  • Biometrics and other sensors
  • 4-5 day battery life targeted
  • Late 2014 release

To make Android watches more functional, Google is starting to make the software available to computer programmers who are interested in creating apps for the software. Motorola Mobility, a subsidiary of Google, may have the first Android watch. (Talks are going on regarding the sale of Motorola Mobility to Lenovo.)

Other companies have already announced their own Android watches.

  • LG, the creator of fashion accessory Fossil and a regular partner in the tablet and Smartphone market of Google, is ready to announce its Android watches in the next few months.
  • Google said that HTC, Asus and Samsung are also creating their own Android watches.

Samsung has already released a smartwatch on the market run by Tizen, their own operating system.

These new watches cater mainly to early adopters and physical fitness devotees who need an effective tool to monitor their health and workouts.

Google's Android smartwatch would attract a more general appeal because the software is currently the most widely-used operating system on mobile devices worldwide. Ranking second is iOS software by Apple, so getting into the smartwatch market would encourage more developments as the battle heats up.
