Barbara Walters Set to Return to Airwaves in 'American Scandals'
Barbara Walters is set to return to TV as host of the Discovery Channel's "American Scandals."
North Jersey Entertainment reports the legendary newswoman will play host of the nine part series, which will further delve into and update some of history's biggest scandals, beginning Monday night.
"We had thousands of past ABC News '20/20' stories to choose from, and we brought some of them up-to-date by talking with subjects we could get to, as well as the people around them," Walters said. "We're exploring what is their life like now? What have they learned? And what can we learn from them?"
The series begins with the still unsolved murder of 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey, found brutally murdered in the basement of her Colorado home nearly two decades ago. Her parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, were immediately considered suspects, and Walters now freely discusses with John Ramsey the mystery that continues to torment him and haunted his wife all the way up until her death in 2006.
Walters also takes another look at such mysteries as the Lyle and Erik Menendez murders of their wealthy parents, the O.J. Simpson, Nicole Brown murders and the fall from grace of former televangelist Jim Bakker and his wife Tammy Faye, who ultimately landed in jail after a slew of sexual and financial transgressions led to the dismantling of his faith-based PTL Club empire.
"We don't have a news magazine anymore," she said, referring to her longtime employer ABC.
"We have '20/20,' but -- they're going to mind my saying this -- it's changed. What Investigation Discovery gives me is the opportunity to present a whole interview and bring it up-to-date."
In the Simpson case, Walters interviews infamous house guest Kato Kaelin, who now readily claims he believes O.J. should have been found guilty. Other episodes include a look at actor Robert Blake, who was tried and acquitted of the 2001 murder of his wife, Bonnie Lee Bakley.
