UFC: Former Welterweight Champions Matt Serra, Matt Hughes Eyeing Rematch
Former UFC Welterweight Champions Matt Serra and Matt Hughes do not like each other and have squared off at UFC 98 in 2009 with Hughes winning via a unanimous decision. In an interview with Jon Anik and Kenny Florian, Serra said that he is open to a rematch with Hughes.
"I'm not the type of guy to be begging for a fight. Don't get me wrong, if I thought there was any way it could happen I'd be, '[Expletive] yes. Let's do it,' but I'd have to get off the testosterone replacement therapy," Serra said via MMA Fighting.
Back in April, Hughes told German newspaper Ground and Pound, as translated by The Bloody Elbow, that he is one phone call away from Dana White to return inside the octagon. He named Serra as his potential opponent if ever he makes his comeback.
"Matt Serra and I had a good match this last time and we've got our differences. So he's been asking for a rematch forever and I'd give it to him if he wanted to," Hughes said.
The two were even involved in a Twitter spat for a potential rematch. According to Serra, Dana White did not like the idea of their rematch.
Both fighters are over 40 years old and both retired since 2013. The 41-year-old Serra is a former one-time welterweight champion and did it by defeating Georges St-Pierre at UFC 69 via knockout in the very first round.
The win was considered one of the greatest upsets in UFC history. He lost the title to GSP a year later at UFC 83 in Montreal, Canada. He had three more fights, including a loss to Hughes at UFC 98, a knockout win over Frank Trigg at UFC 109 and his final bout with Chris Lytle at UFC 119 that ended with a loss via a unanimous decision.
Hughes won the welterweight champion twice and was inducted to the UFC Hall of Fame in 2010. He defeated Carlos Newton back in 2001 at UFC 34 and defended it five more times before losing to BJ Penn via submission at UFC 46 in 2004.
He regained the title when he defeated GSP via armbar at UFC 50 and lost it back to him two years later at UFC 65. Hughes retired after back-to-back losses to BJ Penn and Josh Koscheck at UFC 123 and UFC 135, respectively.
