Chicago Blackhawks star forward Patrick Kane on Thursday was cleared of rape accusations lodged against him by a woman in his hometown of Buffalo.

According to the Chicago Tribune, prosecutors said their three-month probe left them "rife with reasonable doubt."

In a statement, western New York officials added there were "significant material inconsistencies" between the claims made by the alleged victim and several other witnesses. In addition, physical and forensic evidence was reported to have further contradicted many of her claims, including her contention that she was raped in the NHL star's bed.

Investigators also noted that there was no proof she was penetrated, as required by law to prove a charge of rape.

Erie County District Attorney Frank Sedita III also noted Kane never made any statements that could be construed as incriminating. Nor did he engage "in any conduct consistent with consciousness of guilt."

The decision not to move forward with prosecution came just days after the woman alerted authorities she no longer planned to cooperate with the investigation. The 21-year-old college student also signed a rare affidavit declining prosecution, citing the emotional toll the investigation had taken on her and her family.

DNA analysis in the case taken from the accuser was rumored to have indicated more than one male profile, none of them Kane.

Reports are Kane met the woman at a local bar on the night of Aug. 1, and the two later returned to his Hamburg estate with a female friend of hers to continue partying. The woman told authorities the 26-year-old Hawks' star then attacked and assaulted her.

It's unclear if the woman will now seek to file a civil claim against Kane, though his attorney Paul J. Cambria has hinted he is convinced she will. Reports are she has already hired an attorney who specializes in personal injury cases.

After the 2012 season, Kane inked an eight-year, $84 million extension with the Hawks, who have won three of the last six Stanley Cup titles.
