Election 2016: Marco Rubio Says He Wants to Have a Beer With Teen Activist Malala Yousafzai
Florida Sen. Marco Rubio would like to share a few beers with renowned activist Malala Yousafzai, who is both a devout Muslim and under the legal U.S. drinking age.
The 2016 Republican presidential candidate fumbled over a relatively easy question during a Q&A session at St. Anselm College in New Hampshire on Wednesday when he was asked to choose a person who is not a politician to sit down with and drink some brews. In response, the freshman senator picked the 18-year-old Pakistani activist, despite the fact that she is still a teenager and forbidden to consume alcohol under Islamic law.
"Rubio asked who he'd want to have a beer with who's not a politician. He says Malala. Is that legal yet?" tweeted MSNBC reporter Benjy Sarlin, who attended the event.
At the age of 15, Yousafzai was shot in the head by the Taliban for advocating for girls' rights to education in Pakistan. She later won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for her global advocacy work for gender equality and for the rights of women and girls.
According to New Hampshire Public Radio reporter Josh Rogers, Rubio also chose World Chess Champion and Russian dissident Gary Kasparov along with Miami Dolphins star Dan Marino to add to his fantasy beer list.
"Who would Rubio want to have a beer/chat with? Dan Marino, Malala and Gary Kasparov he tells young professionals at St. Anselm college," he tweeted.
Earlier this week, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll revealed that 11 percent of Republican primary voters currently support Rubio compared to 29 percent who are backing GOP front-runner Ben Carson. The polls also shows that Rubio would lose by three points in an hypothetical match off against Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton.
