GOP Debate Milwaukee: Chris Christie, Mike Huckabee Bumped From FBN/WSJ Main Debate Stage
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee did not make the cut to participate on the main stage of the next Republican presidential debate. Instead, both governors have been bumped down to the undercard debate that will take place before the primetime broadcast next Tuesday.
Although the candidates participated in the first three main debates, they did not qualify for the fourth debate, which required all 2016 GOP hopefuls to score an average of at least 2.5 percent in the four most recent national polls, reports The Associated Press.
As a result, Christie and Huckabee will join Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum in the undercard debate in Milwaukee.
Meanwhile, South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, former New York George Pataki and Jim Gilmore failed to qualify for either debate.
The main debate will feature Donald Trump, Ben Carson, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Jeb Bush, Carly Fiorina, John Kasich and Rand Paul. Both debates will be hosted by Fox Business Network and The Wall Street Journal.
Following the announcement, Christie said he does not feel discouraged by taking part in the early debate.
"It doesn't matter the stage, give me a podium and I'll be there to talk about real issues," he tweeted along with the hashtag #BringItOn.
Likewise, Huckabee took the discouraging news with grace, tweeting, "I'm happy to debate anyone, anywhere, anytime."
The Graham campaign, on the other hand, balked at the decision to cut the senator entirely from participating.
"It is ironic that the only veteran in the race is going to be denied a voice the day before Veterans Day," said Graham campaign manager Christian Ferry in a statement. "In the end, the biggest loser tonight is the American people and the Republican presidential primary process that has been hijacked by news outlets."
The main Fox Business/WSJ debate will be held on Nov. 10 at 9 p.m. EST, while the undercard is scheduled at 7 p.m. EST.
