A gunman shot three men near New York's Penn Station on Monday, killing one and injuring two others.

The New York Daily News reports that the shooting occurred early morning at the intersection of 35th street and 8th avenue, a block from Penn Station. Sources say they saw three men leave the scene in a silver vehicle shortly after the incident.

Authorities found a 43-year-old man dead next to the subway entrance, with a bullet wound to the neck. Ed Torres, 48, and another unidentified man, 45, were both found injured in the street. They were transferred to nearby Bellevue Hospital for treatment.

Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said the incident began at a McDonald's where an argument broke out over coffee. The three men were later approached by the alleged gunman, who followed them out of the restaurant and opened fire at the bottom of the stairs at the subway entrance.

According to the Associated Press, two attendees of a local methadone program at the West Midtown Medical Group claimed to know two of the victims, one of whom was killed in the shooting. The victims apparently attended the clinic for years.

"This kind of thing doesn't happen over here," said one of the men, 39-year-old Bronx resident Michael Gessow. "There's a group of us here that don't let things like this go down here. They were real nice guys, straight guys. I can't believe it."

"I have never seen anything like this happen. ... This is terrible," said Queens resident Richard Buckley, 59.

Police could not readily confirm that the victims were members of the clinic, and Boyce told reporters the incident "doesn't look like it has anything to do with the methadone clinic."

The suspect was described as heavyset, with a black hoodie. Two other suspects may also be involved.

The intersection is currently closed off as police conduct their investigation. Transit is expected to be slowed, and bus routes, including M20 and M34A, are being detoured.
