Thousands of Los Angeles area citizens were concerned by a flashing light they saw in the sky Saturday night.

The light prompted some individuals to suspect UFO activity and others to call local authorities.

The cone-shaped light was not a UFO though, it was a missile launched by the U.S. Navy, Independent reports.

Reports started coming in of a mysterious light around 6 p.m. local time in Orange County. Residents called the National Weather Service in Hanford, California to report the strange light in the sky. The light was so bright that some reported seeing it in Arizona.

As residents continued to try and figure out exactly what they were seeing, the Orange County sheriff's office decided to release an official statement on Twitter about the lights in the sky. The office said a missile had been launched by the U.S. Navy to conduct a test.

A group of video bloggers were able to capture the light on tape as they were taping the skies and walking back to their car.

In the video the light appears to be blue and small in size before turning white and growing much larger in size. The light grows so large that it ends up disappearing.

Julien Solomita uploaded the video to YouTube and said it was "a suspicious orange light moving fast."

The suspicious object was confirmed by the U.S. Navy as an unarmed missile that was fired off the coast of Southern California, according to a Navy spokesman, reports NBC San Diego.

The Navy often conducts testing on their weapons and it is common that these tests are unannounced. The Trident II ballistic missile was fired from the nuclear submarine USS Kentucky, said Cmdr. Ryan Perry with the Navy's Third Fleet said the Navy Strategic Systems Programs.
