TAG Heuer Ventures on Android, Introduces Carrera Connected Smartwatch
TAG Heuer is venturing on a new watch that will resemble the concept of the current smartwatches of this generation.
According to TechCrunch, the TAG Heuer watch, which is said to be Android-based, will be called "Carrera Connected." Slated to launch with a price tag of $1,500, the TAG Heuer Carrera Connected will perform similar to that of the Apple Watch. While it won't display a different design as that of the conventional TAG Heuer analog watch, the Carrera Connected will be made of titanium and can be interchangeable with six different watch bands. TAG Heuer CEO Jean-Claude Biver called the new design as the company's way of integrating to the future.
The TAG Heuer Carrera Connected was created in partnership with Google and Intel. The Carrera Connected, however, will run on Google's Android Wear OS. The new smartwatch by TAG is seen to be a direct hit on the Apple Watch, saying that this is by far the Swiss watchmaker's most luxurious Android watch.
BBC reported that since this is a first from the watch company, they have also formulated a Plan B, where consumers will be able to trade in their titanium watch for the conventional analog Tag Heuer watch after two years. Be prepared, however, to pay a fee for the supposed trade in.
Primarily, the TAG Heuer Carrera Connected will be built using the Android OS but the device will also be able to perform limited iOS-based apps such as sending messages and other basic things. In an announcement featured on the Watch Insider, CEO Jean-Claude Biver said, "We are incredibly proud to be unveiling the first connected watch, which brings more than 150 years of history firmly into the future. The TAG Heuer Connected watch gives you the means not only to connect to the future, but also to connect to eternity."
The TAG Heuer Connected has a 46mm diameter with a case, back and lugs that profiles the titanium brand. TAG Heuer chose the titanium body to minimize impacts and reduce the damage caused by it. The conventional steel and gold strap will not be integrated with the TAG Heuer Connected. The straps of the TAG Heuer Connected is made of rubber with a variety of colors mainly green, yellow, black, orange, red and blue. The buckle that holds the strap together is made from grade 2 titanium as well; keeping all of its non-rubber parts fashionably the same.
