Aliens & UFO Sightings: Residents in Cape Town Report Strange 'UFO' Clouds
Citizens in Cape Town, South Africa were concerned about the saucer-shaped objects they saw in the sky on Sunday. The citizens thought they were seeing UFOs and started posting photos to social media.
The actual objects in the skies were just oddly shaped clouds, Daily Mail reports. CNN meteorologist Derek Van Dam added that the clouds called "stratocumulus standing lenticularis" are actually common.
Van Dam said that the odd-shaped clouds can appear when the conditions allow them to.
"They form when conditions are just right. Air flows along the surface of the earth and reaches some sort of obstruction like a mountain or valley," Van Dam said.
People of Cape Town were very alarmed by the clouds though. They posted pictures and commented on what they were seeing on social media sites like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
"There were just these massive UFO type clouds and they became more defined as time passed," Monique Jackson said.
Jackson posted a photo to Twitter with the caption "Weird UFO clouds over Cape Town."
"Right now above my head! The strangest most amazing UFO shaped clouds," Arthur Albert said on Instagram.
eNCA meteorologist Annette Venter understood why people were mistaking the clouds as UFOs. She said that because of the way the clouds are formed they often turn into shapes that make them look like saucers.
"Thus, a wave cloud, or a series of lenticular clouds, is capable of forming. These are often mistaken for UFOs because of the saucer-like shape," Venter said.
This is the second UFO sighting reported from the weekend. On Saturday, Southern California residents reported seeing a blue light in the sky. The light turned out to be a missile that was being tested by the U.S. Navy.
