Tumblr will now allow users to chat with each other through instant messages. The feature will work on the web and the mobile versions of Tumblr starting Tuesday.

The messaging feature will not be available to every Tumblr user right away, Tech Crunch reports. Users who see a smiley balloon on their screens will know that instant messaging has been enabled on their accounts. If a user messages someone who does not yet have the instant message feature enabled, the instant message enables the latter user.

Tumblr says that the instant message feature will be rolled out to every user at a slow pace, with every user gaining the ability to message others within a few weeks.

In order to start enjoying the instant message feature, users will need to make sure that they have the latest version of Tumblr on their mobile devices.

Users will also be able to control who can message them. While any blog can send a message, users can limit incoming messages to only those users whom they follow, and they can block others specifically.

To use instant messaging, users will tap the chat bubble in their dashboards. Then, they will type in the blog that they want to message and start chatting.

Tumblr could become much more inviting with more interaction thanks to messaging. This could help Tumblr grow and encourage people to come back, as they receive more messages and interaction on their blogs.

As opposed to Facebook, which connects friends and family from real life over the Internet, Tumblr connects people with similar interests who don't already know each other. With messages, users will also be able to chat about these common interests.
