'Star Wars Episode 7' Rumors, Cast & Spoilers: Will 'Star Wars' Be an Oscar Contender?
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" will not screen on time for awards season.
According to The Wrap, the upcoming "Star Wars" installment will not be screening for a number of awards organizations including the National Board of Review, which reveals its honors on Dec. 1 and also reveal a top 10 list.
The film will also not screen in time for the New York Film Critics Circle awards, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association honors, or the Screen Actors Guild Awards because nominations and awards for these organizations take place before the film's release date on Dec. 18.
The announcement has yet to be confirmed by Disney but considering the amount secrecy with the film it would not be a surprise. However, it is an interesting ploy considering how pundits had "Star Wars" as an Oscar contender and how many studios rush films out to make sure they qualify for these organizations to obtain Oscar buzz.
"Star Wars" has never been much of an Oscar film except for "A New Hope," which was nominated for Best Picture back in 1977 and went home with seven Academy Awards. The last five installments have been nominated for tech awards including Visual Effects. Five years ago "Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith" was nominated for makeup, the first time the franchise was nominated in the category, but did not get a nod for visual effects.
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is expected to open breaking box office records. While it is hard to predict what the box office opening will be, the film has already made $6.5 million in pre-sales and crashed Fandango. While very little is known about the film, anticipation is high especially since Luke Skywalker is being kept a secret by Disney.
The film, which was directed by J.J. Abrams, stars Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac. The film will open on Dec. 18.
Disney recently released a 60-second TV spot highlighting more new imagery from the film.
