A Google engineer is warning customers that a USB-C cable made by OnePlus should not be purchased because it is non-compliant.

Slash Gear reports. engineer Benson Leung says that the Type C to Type A cables from OnePlus are not compliant and could cause damage to users' devices. Leung posted reviews on Amazon product pages and on his own Google+ page, warning potential buyers that the OnePlus cable could endanger Chromebooks or the two new Nexus smartphones, the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P.

Do NOT buy this #USB   #TypeC  to Type-A cable from +OnePlus.

It is not spec compliant (uses a 3A identifier resistor instead of the "Default USB Power" one), and may cause damage to your charger, hub, or PC USB port if you use it with #ChromebookPixel  or #nexus6p   #Nexus5x .

USB type C is a brand new technology that is still being slowly developed. While there are many reported benefits to the new type of cable and its associated port, many unknowns, including poorly made cables, raise early concerns.

Leung has tried out many USB Type C cords and adapters available on Amazon and other reputable websites. Most of the cords and adapters he has tested are lacking in compliance. The engineer said that some cords from Belkin and iOrange-E are adequate, but those typically cost much more than many alternatives.

It is not rare for third party accessories to be cheaply made, but an OEM cable from a company like OnePlus should not have these problems. Leung has highlighted the OnePlus USB-C products as being "out of spec." The latest OnePlus smartphone, the OnePlus 2, is one of the first devices to use the new technology.

Leung said that using the OnePlus USB-C cable could result in damaged USB ports, chargers or hubs. Until the USB-C technology is further developed and improved, he added it is best to use cables that are included with the original device, instead of mixing cables from other companies.

The USB Type-C cable from OnePlus sells for just $5.49 directly from their website.
