'Mass Effect: Andromeda' Update: N7 Day 2015 Trailer Subtly Reveals Protagonist's Name
"Mass Effect" fans have taken it upon themselves to unearth more clues regarding "Mass Effect: Andromeda." The latest tidbit involves a dog tag on the lower left side portion of the screen, 44 seconds into the N7 Day 2015 trailer.
An eagle-eyed Reddit user was the first to discover the easter egg, which is rumored to contain the name of the game's main protagonist.
According to Benelioto via EuroGamer, the dog tag reads "RYDER" or "RIDER." The user also indicated that the protagonist's might be named in honor of Sally Ride, the first American woman in space. The speculation seemed to hold weight as the protagonist from the original trilogy was named Shepard in honor of the first American man in space, Alan Shepard.
It's worth mentioning that the game's announcement trailer shown at E3 back in June was accompanied by Johnny Cash's version of "Ghost Riders In The Sky." Reddit user The_Iceman2288 quickly pointed out that another term for "ghost" is "spectre," a group of handpicked individuals responsible for preserving galactic stability in the "Mass Effect" universe.
In further support of the latest speculation, when a fan on Twitter asked BioWare Montreal Chief Yanick Roy if the studio could change the song to "proper music that fits the Mass Effect universe," Roy replied with, "No, sorry, because there are very good reasons for that choice of song for the trailer that should become clear later on."
What is known for sure is that "Mass Effect: Andromeda" won't include familiar characters from the original trilogy, especially Commander Shepard. BioWare Senior Development Director Chris Wynn took to Twitter to ask fans to "be open-minded" about the change as the RPG doesn't necessarily need Shepard in order to be successful. His comments were in line with BioWare's intention of expanding the "Mass Effect" universe even more.
"When we wrapped up the original Mass Effect trilogy with Mass Effect 3: Citadel in early 2013, planning and design on Mass Effect: Andromeda was already well underway. We knew we wanted to start with a foundation composed of the best parts of any Mass Effect game: exciting new worlds to discover, great characters, and intense action. At the same time, we clearly wanted to expand the definition of what you should expect from a Mass Effect game," explained BioWare on its official blog site shortly after its E3 announcement.
As to the gameplay of "Mass Effect: Andromeda," Wynn had this to say:
"Mass Effect: Andromeda" is expected to release in autumn 2016, per EuroGamer.
