The Miami Marlins finished at a disappointing 71-91 record after a very good 2014 season that saw them challenge for an NL Wild Card spot. Their offseason just got interesting with the news that the Marlins are trying to trade ace Jose Fernandez this winter, Craig Mish of Sirius XM reports via Twitter.

Fernandez is only 23 years old and has a 22-9 record with a solid 2.40 ERA, a 1.01 WHIP and 336 strikeouts in 289 innings pitched over three seasons, per Baseball-Reference. He is arbitration eligible this offseason but is under club control until 2018.

According to NBC Sports, the Miami Marlins have Giancarlo Stanton and Fernandez as a core to build around a championship team. Fernandez already has some injury concerns because he missed most of last season and this season recovering from Tommy John surgery. He also missed a month this season due to a strain in his right biceps.

The report also mentioned that the recent feud between the Marlins' front office and his agent Scott Boras is the key whether Miami will part ways with Fernandez. The tension started over the workload of the pitcher during the season and the treatment of outfield Marcell Ozuna, another Boras client.

“My strong suggestion to Mr. Boras is that instead of resting on his 5 percent that he collects from his stable of players, he write a check and buy a team. Then he would have the opportunity to run a team that he claims to be so able to do. Until that time, he is in no position to comment how any Major League Baseball team is operated,” Marlins President David Samson said via the Associated Press.

“He will not be involved in any discussion as it relates to Jose Fernandez. We will be in touch with the doctors and Jose as we formulate a plan,” he added.

However, Jose Frisaro of MLB.com reported via Twitter that Fernandez is not being shopped by the Marlins according to his sources. He also said that he is not sure if the Marlins will change their mind and try to trade their ace.

Yahoo! Sports added that Fernandez is a Cuban-born pitcher who plays in a city with a lot of Cuban communities. He started his career with the Marlins. He is one of the fan favorites in the team and a role model for many of the young and local Cuban citizens of the city.
